Hanayome Noren (Bridal Curtain)

The Hanayome Noren is a traditional custom said to have begun in the late Edo to early Meiji period in the Maeda clan’s domain (Noto, Kaga, and Etchu).
Parents prepared an elaborate curtain dyed with Kaga techniques or Kaga Yuzen as part of their daughter’s wedding trousseau.
The motifs painted on these curtains carry heartfelt wishes and emotions that words alone cannot fully express.

In Kanazawa—a city where tradition and innovation coexist—there is something we clearly see:
New creativity is always supported and grounded in tradition.
And by pursuing innovation, new traditions are created.
As artisans, we work with gratitude and pride to create in Kanazawa.
For 120 years, we have preserved traditional techniques such as stencil carving, hand printing, and hand-painted Yuzen. As a dyeing workshop capable of handling everything from design to dyeing and sewing, we share the beauty of traditional Japanese culture through generations of accumulated experience.

The Kaga Yuzen Dyeing Process

The Process of Making
Kaga Yuzen Silk Dyeing

The process consists of many steps, all of which require a high degree of skill. As it takes both time and patience to complete each hand-dyed piece of Kaga Yuzen, the art is highly valued.

1 Designing

The design expresses the appearance and impression of nature in the colors and shapes called for.

2 Sewing white silk fablic into a Kimono

Mark the white fabric, cut it out, and sew it again to the shape of the kimono. This will prevent the patterns from mismatching at the seams.

3 Copying the design on paper onto the fabric

Undyed fabric is placed on top of a design and lit up from below. The design is traced with the juice of an Asiatic Dayflower called aobana. When the fabric is rinsed in water later on, the aobana color disappears.

4 Application of rice paste

Paste made from steamed glutinous rice powder is squeezed out of a piping bag onto the thin lines drawn in the previous step. This paste, whose purpose is to prevent dyes from running in the next step, is called itome-nori.

5 Color application

A variety of colors are applied inside the paste outline with several kinds of brushes. Advanced techniques and a strong sense of color are required.

6 Coating with rice paste

In the next step, when dyeing the overall base color, the process involves filling the entire pattern with glue to prevent the base color from seeping into the patterned areas.

7 Dyeing of the background

The next step is to dye the background with a brush. It takes concentration, experience and skill to dye it evenly.

8 Steaming

Put the roll of cloth in the steam box and steam it. The dye on the surface of the cloth enters the fiber.

9 Washing

The itome-nori, fuse-nori and excess dye are washed away in running water. Yuzen-nagashi, or the spreading out of dyed fabrics in the clear, cold running water of a river, is one of Kanazawa’s special wintertime attractions.

10 Water removal and drying

After washing with water, it is dried and the dough is prepared, and beautiful Kaga Yuzen.

11 Finished

Kaga Yuzen & Kaga Dyeing — A Dye House with Over 100 Years of History in Kanazawa

Founded 120 years ago, Akeneya has long been dedicated to Kaga Yuzen and Kaga dyeing in Kanazawa, pursuing original expression through refined dyeing techniques.
The name “Akeneya” is derived from Akane-ya Riemon, who is said to have been invited by Lord Maeda Tsunanori in the early Edo period. He refined madder dyeing techniques in this region and contributed to the development of Kaga’s dyeing culture.
In honor of this history, we continue to carry the name “Akeneya.”
